Looking to get up to speed quickly with the Open source GIS Suite? Join us in Magendhiran Consultancy Services (www.mcsmapping.com) training facility, located in Gandhi Nagar, Kanchipuram. Our facility includes a fully-equipped classroom setting, plenty of space for instructor interaction with Open Source GIS experts (Resource Person). Or if you prefer, our experts can come to you: the full course catalog is available for on-site trainings at your facilities (Recent Workshops conducted).

Advantages of Open Source GIS

The growth of GIS is hindered by highly priced proprietary software and unavailability of public geodata. Many of such licensed software remain unutilized in various government offices because they require either extensive training or easy availability on multiple locations. All this can be changed by the use of Free/Open source software GIS tools. This is significant since all government data and most educational institutions work in local language media. FOSS GIS or Free/Open source Geospatial software are more powerful and usable for developing systems where more and more public participation is sought.

Course Description

1. Introduction to GIS (60 Exercises + 5 case studies) - 40 hours
After completing the course you will be able to understand basic GIS concepts including spatial data structures, Installation of software, custom settings, data creation using data sources (Aerial Photo, Satellite Imagery, Topographic Sheets, GPS survey, LiDAR data, Total Station survey) and transfer methods, Interpretation keys, projections and coordinate systems, geo-referencing, data editing, updating, modifying, attribute storing, querying (attribute and spatial) retrieving as well as fundamental spatial analysis techniques such as buffering, overlaying, extraction and interpolation. Also cartography (map preparation) techniques, Explains various case studies ongoing projects. Concepts presented in lecture will be put into practice through hands-on laboratory exercises utilizing the open source GIS software product like: QGIS & GRASS

2. Advanced GIS (35 Exercises + 5 Case Studies + 3 Research works) - 40 hours
In this class, you will learn about Advanced GIS concepts including Attribute field calculator, Attribute table manager, Advanced geo-referencing methods, Topology building and error fixing, shortest path identification, Preparation of Slope map, aspect map, hill shade map, Relief map, Roughness map from DEM (Digital Elevation Model). Contours (1m, 5m 10m interval) creation from DEM and Total Station survey data. Voronoi diagram, Heat map and interpolation map preparation. Statistical Analysis, Basic Image Processing operations, Raster calculation (like NDVI and VI), Fuzzy logic, Boolean logic applications in GIS, Landuse Change detection, Advanced cartographic techniques to prepare map atlas.

3. Satellite Image Processing (60 exercises + 5 case studies) - 40 hours
After completing the course you will be able to understand basic Image Processing and Remote Sensing, Various sources of imagery, Image Pixel and resolution concepts, Histogram, Subsetting, Tiling, Mosaciking, Patching, DEM analysis, Geo-referencing, Re-projection, Layer Stacking,, Composite, Zonal statistics, Raster Calculations, unsupervised and supervised classification, Landuse changes, NDVI & VI, Color map, Multi-criteria Analysis.

4. GPS Surveying
Attendees will learn about and GPS Surveying concepts with help of lab exercises Theory: GPS satellite principle, Kepler's Laws, User segment, Control Segment, Space segment. Also Working principle of GPS and DGPS. Type & Accuracy of Instruments. Lab Exercise using Handheld GPS: Surveying way points, tracking line, Creating polygon & Creating Elevation model

5. PostGIS+ PostgreSQL
In this class, you will learn about Data base concepts, download postgreSQL and postGIS, installation, Conversion of shapefiles to database format, basic database and SQL querying, Geometric data types, Export database, Spatial and Non-spatial SQL queries, Data visualization techniques using open source GIS software like QGIS. PostGIS adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database. In effect, PostGIS "spatially enables" the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS).

Custom Training
For those who have unique training needs, MCS also provides custom training sessions with core developers of our open source projects. These sessions are geared towards advanced students who are looking for help to solve particular problems using the Open Source GIS Tools.

When scheduling a session please provide information on your current knowledge and skill set, what you would like to learn, and the problems you are trying to solve. This will help us select the best instructor. To ensure optimum learning, each session will be limited to one particular component of the Open Source GIS Tools-database, server, or client. During the session the student can ask the instructor to clarify GPS Survey concepts, GPR survey concepts, Remote Sensing concepts, Digital Image Processing concetps, LiDAR Classification concept and make performance suggestions give expert advice, and more.

As these sessions are geared towards advanced students, we recommend students are already familiar with the specific component of the GIS concepts. This means completing at least one of the Open Source GIS introductory courses or equivalent experience. Custom training sessions are geared towards individuals, although we can accommodate two or three students at a time as long as they are at the same level of knowledge.
